Young Professionals invited to discover the Benefits of Carbon Capture and Storage

OilVoice (Press Release)

A leading oil and gas expert is set to present at a young professionals event this week, which will discuss CO2 capture, transportation and deep geological storage and how it can alleviate the worst effects of climate change.

The seminar, hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen section’s Young Professionals committee, is part of its ‘Simplified Series’ which aims to demystify oil and gas technical issues. The event is targeted at young professional and student members of SPE Aberdeen but is open to all.

A presentation entitled ‘Everything you Wanted to Know about Carbon Capture and Storage but were Afraid to Ask’ will be delivered by Ian Phillips, Director at CO2DeepStore Ltd. Ian has 30 years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, and is founding Director of one of the first companies to provide the service of CO2 capture, transportation and deep geological storage.

During the event he will outline the the science behind climate change, discuss the available capture technologies, the technical and HSE challenges associated with transporting, injecting and storing CO2, and will discuss possible uses for CO2, including enhanced oil recovery and turning CO2 into diesel fuel.

Commenting on the upcoming seminar, Ian said: “Climate change science is often misunderstood and as a result there is considerable confusion about the serious effects that climate change is causing.

“Carbon capture and storage is key to reducing dangerous levels of emissions of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

“It is vital that we share the advances in CCS practices with our industry peers, particularly the next generation of professionals who will be the ones responsible for implementing the techniques. The event will provide young professionals with the opportunity to learn more about the CCS chain and have their questions around the topic answered.”

Ian Phillips holds an M.Eng. in Petroleum Engineering, is a founding Director of CO2DeepStore Ltd, and is an active board member of SPE Aberdeen and a Director of Young Enterprise Grampian.

The presentation will take place on Thursday 18 July at the Macrobert Building, University of Aberdeen, from 6-8pm. It is open to all SPE students and young professionals, as well as those interested in becoming a member. Entry is free and bookings can be made at http://www.rodgerandco.com/details.asp?id=384&linkId=null.
