Lofty Goal, Strong Investment

Goal: 90%+ Capture of CO2 from coal-fired plant, increase electricity costs by no more than 35%
Challenge: Existing Technology would increase electricity costs by about 80%. Existing methods must be improved.

An investment in research into  four different methods of making carbon capture more efficient was announced last week, indicating a clear focus on addressing the issue that currently, CCS techniques have proven too costly for more widespread adoption.

Methods being tested include a "NeuStream absorber", and a post combustion process that incorporates BASF's amine based process.

Research into increasing cost-effectiveness goes hand in hand with the goal of developing a more effective political policy regarding CCS. If the technology can be improved, then a case can be made for more legislation requiring attention to limiting carbon dioxide emissions.
