Course Catalog

This course will provide methods, strategies, and tools to implement sustainable principles and practices in an organization, or community. Individuals and teams involved, or hope to be involved, in implementing sustainability initiatives will benefit from the information and resources presented in this course. There will be a strong focus on processes that make sustainability initiatives stick. The curriculum enables organizational leaders and change agents to drive change. Participants will use their current, or purposed, change scenario(s) as a base to frame specific plans and action steps in their organization, or community. This class is preceded by Strategies for Sustainability, Best Practices: Understanding and customizing leading sustainability strategies and frameworks class on April 29, 2009. Course Topics:

• Framing sustainability in your organization

• Tools and methods to begin and/or lead a change initiative in the context of sustainability.

• Tools and methods to engage leaders and stakeholders.

• How to bring dialogue to action

• Empowering change agents - how change agents can impact an organization or "system"

• Strategies to implement sustainable principles and practices

• Managing, defining, and customize the roles, responsibilities, and resources for an organization make sustainability stick

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Design and engage a sustainability strategy.
  • Move forward with actions steps and plans relevant to their individual change scenarios.
  • Have a clear picture of the steps required for a successful change initiative in their organization.
  • Have resources and tools to support the implementation of sustainable principles and practices in an organization or community.

About the Instructor: Travis Green is a sustainability consultant focused on designing organizations and communities that thrive in the 21st Century. For over a decade he has provided change leadership and strategic focus across business, academic and non-profit sectors. Travis consultants with organizations and communities that wish to integrate sustainable principles and practices. To make this happen, he focuses on leadership development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning and implementation. His work within the sustainability community includes the collaborative design and facilitation of a Sustainability Confluence that brought together 48 cross-sector sustainability leaders to create collaborative action. Additionally, Travis is a charter organizer and a lead facilitator for Seattle’s Legacy Leadership Institute on Environmental Stewardship. Recently, he has co-designed and co-facilitated both “Sustainability in Action”, a three-day class provided by the Northwest Environmental Training Center (NWETC), and “Climate Action Labs”, a neighborhood engagement initiative. Travis also sits on the Board of Directors of Sustainable Seattle and the Community Consulting Partnership.

Intended audience: Sustainability Leaders and “Change agents” – people, or small groups, that are engaged in the implementation of sustainable principles and practices in an organization or community. People and/or organizations engaged in the Sustainability Movement.

Prerequisites: Have a foundational understanding of sustainable principles and practices. Bring a scenario/project that can be worked on during the session.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil, coffee mug, and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Please wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the prevailing weather. Drinks and snacks will be provided each day.
