This one-day workshop will provide participants with an overview of Community Based Social Marketing concepts, tools and processes to foster sustainable behavior in the public. Learn new techniques and receive powerful tools to incorporate a Community Based Social Marketing approach to programs and projects in your organization. Community Based Social Marketing has been proven to successfully change behavior and provide measurable social benefits. You will learn how to go beyond brochures, advertising, and posters by using proven strategies for changing awareness and behavior.

Overview of Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM) Approaches and Tools:

  • Research (surveys, focus groups, etc.)
  • Disincentives and Incentives
  • Norming
  • Commitment
  • Overcoming Barriers
  • Prompts
  • Vivid Communication
  • Evaluation
  • Adaptation from Feedback (CBSM Adaptive Management)
  • Case Studies of Successful CBSM Programs

After completing the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Understand and explain the CBSM approach;
  • Apply CBSM research techniques to new and existing projects;
  • Understand barriers and benefits to behavior change;
  • Incorporate social marketing methods to enhance existing programs and projects;
  • Design new projects using research-based methods for achieving measurable results;
  • Analyze the applicability of CBSM tools for specific projects and programs;
  • Develop a strategy for a program; and
  • Incorporate CBSM into adaptive management practices.

Intended Audience: Project managers, community leaders, elected officials and their staff, marketing professionals, and program staff seeking an improved understanding of social marketing techniques and examples of successful projects.

About the Instructor: Lisa Quinn comes from a traditional marketing background with a Bachelor of Science in advertising from San Jose State University. Convinced she couldn't sell her soul for a pair of shoes, she headed down a path of passion, which incorporated both education and environment, landing her in the center of sustainable transportation, where she has been incorporating social marketing techniques for over 13 years. Lisa is the Executive Director of Feet First, a pedestrian advocacy organization providing active living by design techniques and facilitating the statewide Safe Routes to School program.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil, coffee mug, and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Please wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the prevailing weather. Drinks and snacks will be provided each day.
