Description: Many ecologists and managers often use statistical models that may not be appropriate or that violate basic model assumptions (i.e. independence), which can lead to erroneous conclusions. We will begin with an introduction to ecological statistics and then explore and discuss several methods: Non Metric Multidimensional Scaling, Classification and Regression Trees, and Non Parametric Multiplicative Regression.

About the Instructor: David Richards holds a Ph. D. in Ecology, an MS in Entomology, and an MS equivalent in Ecological Statistics. He has worked as a resource manager for over 20 years and has taught numerous courses in ecology from graduate to grade school levels. His most recent research has been developing a viability analysis and risk assessment for a threatened species in the Snake River, Idaho.

Course Topics:

  • Introduction to Ecological Statistics
  • Spatial and temporal autocorrelation
  • Non Metric Multidimensional Scaling
  • Classification and Regression Tree Analysis (CART)

  • Non Parametric Multiplicative Regression

Intended Audience: This course is intended for environmental professionals interested in the use of appropriate ecological statistical methods
