Description: This three-day comprehensive field and classroom-based course will provide participants with applied introduction to standard techniques for effluent and ambient water quality sampling and in-depth knowledge and skills required to design and develop a structured water quality monitoring program. Course participants will learn standard freshwater sampling quality assurance measures, as well as spend considerable time in field and lab-based sessions learning to operate various types of sampling equipment as well as completing and participating in a number of case studies and exercises to reinforce the principles introduced in the classroom. The case studies will uphold current British Columbia provincial and federal legislation and best management practices for monitoring program design.

Instructor: Les is a professional engineer (P. Eng.) with more than 35 years experience in the field of water quality. He worked with the Province of Manitoba as well as B.C. Environment.

Les developed the current BC water quality index on which the national water quality index is based. He also developed the Rapid Assessment Approach for developing site-specific water quality guidelines. In recent years, Les has focused on passing on his knowledge by teaching courses on different aspects of water quality to international (Egyptian) students as well as students in B.C., Newfoundland, and other parts of Canada.

Intended Audience: Individuals interested in or working with erosion and sediment control initiatives, including: industry consultants (e.g., environmental, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, geological, engineering, integrated), land developers, government (municipal, regional, provincial, federal) personnel (e.g., Ministry of Transportation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada), industry (e.g., gas and oil companies, forest licensees, mining and exploration firms, telecommunications companies, agriculture), and first nations.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and define water quality terms critical to effective study design
  • Define the main principles in the design of effluent sampling programs and ambient fresh water quality monitoring programs
  • Contrast and define a variety of potential program designs
  • Develop study designs for a wide variety of applications
  • Identify quality assurance measures;
  • Identify sampling locations;
  • Develop safety plans;
  • Conduct field filtration and preservation;
  • Recording field notes and identifying chain of custody; and
  • Conduct water quality sampling using (and calibrating) field meters and other types of sampling equipment.
