Description: A comprehensive three-day applied overview of skills, abilities and procedures required for effective erosion and sediment control planning, construction and maintenance. The three-day course introduces participants to the theory and practice of erosion and sediment control via in-class lectures and exercises (1.0 day), and numerous field exercises (2.0 days). Participants will spend considerable time in a field-based practicum planning, constructing, evaluating and maintaining erosion control structures and products for a wide variety of applications.

Instructor: Ed van Osch is an industry-recognized leader in environmental monitoring, assessment and resource analysis. Since 1995, Ed has managed numerous linear, urban and resource development projects for government and industry.

Ed’s project portfolio includes successful completion of a number of large and small scale projects for forestry, oil and gas, resource development and government clients.

Since 2004, Ed has delivered our environmental and erosion control training courses to over 1500 NREP course participants throughout Canada. Ed has previously taught environmental courses at Simon Fraser University and Capilano College.


Intended Audience: Individuals interested in or working with erosion and sediment control initiatives, including: industry consultants (e.g., environmental, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, geological, engineering, integrated), land developers, government (municipal, regional, provincial, federal) personnel (e.g., Ministry of Transportation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada), industry (e.g., gas and oil companies, forest licensees, mining and exploration firms, telecommunications companies, agriculture), and first nations.

Course Materials: Attendees will receive a binder containing workshop proceedings and reference material.

What to Bring:
Classroom: Pen or pencil, calculator, coffee mug, and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Please wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the prevailing weather. Coffee/tea/lunch will be provided both days.

Field:

  • Appropriate field work clothing (note: Please avoid tight-fitting jeans and consider bringing extra socks and a second pair of pants)
  • Sturdy footwear (heavy soled work boots and waterproof boots, steel shank in sole desirable but not required)
  • Sturdy raingear (pants and jacket)
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Clinometer
  • Pointed-tip digging shovel (with 4-5' long wooden handle)
  • Pulaski
  • 3-5m steel retractable
  • 3 lb sledge hammer (short handle)
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Hi-vis vest
  • Flagging tape
  • Water Bottle
