Guest Speaker:
Llyn Doremus, M.S., Hydrology and Water Engineer with Nooksack Indian Tribe

This course has been cancelled for further information please contact Ingrid Clausen.

Description: This two-day course will cover the basics of surface water, groundwater, and evaporative processes. An online textbook module, streaming video animations, lectures, and interactive problem solving will be used to build understanding water transport, and what data and tools are available to better understand processes on local and regional scales. In addition, the course will include real-life applications of using hydrologic models to better inform the decision-making process. Students are encouraged to bring their own watershed-specific questions or issues for group analysis and discussions.
Course Topics:

Day 1:

  • Overview of water runoff
  • Runoff generation mechanisms
  • Physical factors affecting runoff
  • Soil properties
  • Principles of groundwater movement
  • Hydro-Geology of Western Washington
  • Evapo-transpiration
  • Land use and effects on the hydrologic cycle

Day 2:

  • At point infiltration models for calculating runoff
  • Simulation of runoff generation in hydrologic models
  • Watershed modeling overview
  • Distributed watershed modeling applications
  • Western Washington hydrologic data and tools
  • Water balance examples from western Washington
  • Question and interactive problem solving

Intended Audience: Entry Level and practicing environmental professionals, especially environmental scientists doing interdisciplinary work with water issues.

About the Instructor: Christina Bandaragoda is the Principal Scientist and CEO of Silver Tip Solutions, focusing on water use estimation, hydrologic modeling, and stormwater drainage. Her areas of expertise include watershed modeling, water resource management, and economic development. She holds an M.S. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, an M.B.A. in Business Administration, and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
