Description: This course will enhance participants’ understanding of major developments that have led businesses to incorporate environmental protection, workplace safety, employee health/wellness, and social responsibility into business strategy, planning and operations. Students will learn the history of United States and international laws and regulations, the growth of public expectations in these areas and how corporations have responded. Students will apply skills related to accounting, environmental management, and business administration in addressing these issues. Case studies will be examined and classroom exercises will be incorporated to provide the opportunity to apply EHS management principles to real world business situations.

Course Topics

Specific topics discussed in this class will be:
• History of EHS laws, regulatory framework in the United States
• ESH management systems (e.g., ISO 14001)
• Transnational regulations (e.g., EU REACH, ROHS, and WEEE)
• Partnering with external stakeholders
• Public reporting
• Supply chain EHS management and sustainability

After completing this course, participants will be able to:
• Cite key events that were brought the environmental movement into the mainstream
• Cite and describe the most important U.S. EHS laws/regulations and international EHS agreements that directly impact Fortune 500 corporations and describe the impact
• Define an EHS management system and describe how EHS management principles can be applied to business planning and administration



About the Instructor:
Mr. Evanoff’s career includes service in the military, consulting, and corporate management positions in the aerospace, defense and real estate industries. Currently, he is Vice President of Environment, Health & Safety for one of the largest apartment management firm in the nation. He is responsible for all aspects of the company’s workplace safety, occupational health and environmental management programs, spanning 1,100 properties in 46 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Prior to his current position, Stephen held executive management positions with Lockheed Martin Corporation. He was Corporate Director of Energy, Environment, Safety, & Health (“EESH”) Central Services, was responsible for EESH government relations with federal and state agencies, and managed the corporation’s largest environmental remediation project.

He was a US Representative to United Nations Environment Programme under the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Layer Protection, where he recommended technologies for eliminating stratospheric ozone depleting chemicals from aerospace manufacturing and co-authored United Nations technical reports. Stephen served five years active duty in the U.S. Air Force and received the Air Force Commendation Medal.

He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering and is a distinguished graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Air Force ROTC program. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, a Board Certified Safety Professional, and a Registered Environmental Manager.

Stephen has authored or co-authored 30 articles and book chapters and holds one patent. He has served as a course instructor and guest lecturer at Denver University, University of Colorado, University of Dayton and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He received the EPA Stratospheric Protection Award, the EPA Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Protection Award, and a special commendation from the U.S. Secretary of Defense for his leadership in pollution prevention and ozone layer protection.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of EHS Managers. He has served as President and member of the Board of Directors of the West Washington Park Neighborhood Association and Friends and Neighbors of Washington Park in Denver. He is an avid mountaineer spending much of his free time skiing, biking, hiking and backpacking in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. He is married and has one son.


Intended audience: Business and industry managers who have responsibility for EHS issues, business and industry professionals and managers who want to learn the basics of EHS management, senior undergraduate or graduate-level college students in public policy, urban planning, business, management, marketing, accounting, science or engineering, and MBA students.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil, coffee mug, and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Please wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the prevailing weather. Lunch will be on your own. Drinks and snacks will be provided both days.

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of business management or industry, a college education or equivalent experience.
