Contaminated Sediment Management with SEDQUAL -
Hands-on Training with the Sediment Quality Information System (SEDQUAL) Software

Course ID: CSM-401

June 28 - 29, 2006, 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M. (2 Days) | Allied Business Systems, Computer Lab A | 10604 NE 38th Place, Kirkland, WA

Instructor: Pamela Sparks, Environmental Management Services

Description: This course provides participants with hands-on experience using the Sediment Quality Information System (SEDQUAL). Washington State Department of Ecology is in the process of adding SEDQUAL functionality to their Environmental Information Management System (EIM) under the module name of "EnviroQual". EnviroQual does not replace SEDQUAL as a stand-alone database and EnviroQual will not have all the functionality of SEDQUAL when it is initially released in late 2006 (e.g., the bioassay tool may not be included in the first release of EnviroQual).

Current and prospective SEDQUAL/EnviroQual users are encouraged to attend this training. The material covered applies to both SEDQUAL and the EIM EnviroQual module. SEDQUAL is used by Federal, State and local regulatory organizations, environmental consultants, academic institutions, and other environmental stakeholders to store and evaluate sediment chemistry, sediment toxicity, benthic infaunal, bioaccumulation, and histological data. Participants will have opportunities to import data into SEDQUAL, and test their savvy for error-checking, troubleshooting and data entry QA guidelines. Participants will also use SEDQUAL's analytical tools for running chemical summations, statistical evaluations of toxicity data, and computation of biological indices.

Course Topics:

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

Retrieve, store, transpose, evaluate, and map the synoptic sediment chemistry, toxicity and biological data housed in SEDQUAL.

The training will provide opportunities to:

  • Retrieve and import sediment quality data;
  • View sediment data spatially in GIS along with other GIS-related attributes;
  • Use SEDQUAL analytical tools for computing standard chemical summations; perform statistical evaluations of toxicity data; and compute biological indices for benthic infaunal data;
  • Explain the assumptions underlying the analytical tools as well as the limitations for their applications;
  • Evaluate site data and demonstrate compliance in accordance with the SMS guidelines

Prerequisites: Some familiarity with SEDQUAL, SMS, and fundamental statistics is helpful, but not required.

Education Level: Introductory/Intermediate

Course Materials: Each participant will receive a copy of the course proceedings and SEDQUAL 5.0 software.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Drinks and snacks will be provided each day. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance for lunch.

Continuing Education Units: 1.3

Registration: $495 ($395 reduced tuition is available to Native American Tribes; nonprofits; government agencies; students; and NEBC, NWAEP, and NAEP members). You may register via the links below or by calling NWETC at (206) 762-1976.
