Description: An overview of the California's stormwater regulations including the General Industrial Stormwater Permit, the General Construction Stormwater Permit, Phase I and Phase II municipal permitting and programs addressing regulation of other sources of stormwater pollution including Confined Animal Feeding Operations and the Irrigated Lands Program. The history of each of the permits will be discussed and the basic requirements of each permit will be outlined.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of stormwater regulatory requirements in California
  • Understand why there are stringent laws which regulate the discharge of stormwater pollutants,
  • Determine which permits a business is required to enroll under and what specific monitoring and BMP requirements apply, and
  • Determine when Best Management Practices are needed and what types should be used under different circumstances.

About the Instructor: Peter Peuron has worked as an environmental scientist for 20 years including 11 years overseeing underground storage tank cleanups for the County of Orange, seven years overseeing industrial cleanups for the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board and two years performing oversight in the Regional Board's stormwater program. He holds a BS in Soil Science and an MS in Agriculture. Mr. Peuron has performed numerous presentations concerning mechanisms of environmental pollution and environmental regulation at venues such as the UCLA Extension Program and the Association for Environmental Health Sciences, as well as numerous water quality-related workshops and stakeholers meetings.

Intended Audience: This course is designed for professionals seeking a greater understanding of California stormwater regulations and permitting. Those encouraged to attend are consultants, business owners, regulators, environmental activists and attorneys.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil, coffee mug, and a water bottle (to reduce waste). Please wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the prevailing weather. Lunch will be on your own. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance. Drinks and snacks will be provided each day.
